When you immerse yourself in the local ways of life such as parks and markets, you see the city through a different lens and create authentic lasting memories.
London by Foot for a Beautiful Day
During a recent work trip to London, I had the chance to explore Regent's Park, Camden, and Belsize Park on foot. These areas were full of exciting attractions and gorgeous flowers during May.
This London Local itinerary was inspired by aimlessly wandering the streets, however it turned out to be a fantastic day that can be easily replicated for all.
Follow this thoughtfully planned schedule and fully enjoy your day on foot as you experience everything the local area has to provide. You will embark on a journey through Camden and Belsize Park, where you can explore the city's vibrant culture and sample delicious street food. This guide is designed for walking to provide the best experience, although public transportation is an easily accessible option as well.
Check-In at London Marriott Hotel Regents Park
Start your day by settling into the London Marriott Hotel Regents Park; centrally located to offer comfort and convenience throughout your exploration. This is a great option to book your stay, keeping you from the busier sections of London. Being just 45 minutes via underground train from LHR airport, this hotel is easy to access.
The hotel offers a quiet setting just a short walk from the Swiss Cottage Underground Station. Marriott is always a reliable offer when traveling for a short period of time such as one day, or a weekend. The staff is always helpful and accommodating in making local recommendations, which is how some of this local journey came to be.
Once you leave the London Marriott Hotel Regents Park, the streets of Camden and Belsize Park beckon with their charm. It is hard to pick a wrong street to walk down as this is a very safe neighborhood.
From the hotel, you will will walk toward Daunt Books. Cobblestone paths wind between rows of elegant townhouses adorned with colorful flower boxes, while leafy trees provide a canopy of shade overhead.
Walk from the Hotel to Daunt Books is approximately 1.0 mile (22 minutes)
While walking, you will soon realize why this route is the optimal way to discover London by foot. Cafes are bustling with life, with their outdoor seating extending onto the sidewalks, encouraging you to take a moment and enjoy the ambiance.
Your First Stop, Dive into Literature at Daunt Books
Kick off your local London journey with a visit to Daunt Books, just a short stroll from your hotel. Daunt Books has become more than just a bookshop; it's a cultural institution in London. It hosts regular author events, book signings, and readings, fostering a community of readers and writers.
The shop is frequently featured in literary tours of the city and has appeared in various media, including films and travel guides. Once in the bookstore lose yourself in their vast collection, and don't forget to pick up a captivating read in a local park or for your travels back home. The book I picked up this trip was The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry, a local to England.
Walk from Daunt Books to GAIL's BAKERY approximately 300 feet (2 minutes)
Indulge at GAIL’s Bakery London Belsize Park
Satisfy your morning cravings at GAIL’s Bakery, where freshly baked pastries and steaming coffee await. GAIL's Bakery was founded in 2005 with the aim of bringing exceptional bread and baked goods to London neighborhoods. Not only is this bakery chain a local London staple, it is conveniently located by the book store.
The bakery is dedicated to using the finest ingredients and traditional baking methods to create delicious, wholesome products. Treat yourself to a delightful breakfast in this cozy setting or take your treats to go to the next destination Primrose Hill.
*Note the bakery closes at 6:00 pm
Walk from GAIL's BAKERY to Primrose Hill approximately 0.9 miles (20 minutes)
Soak in Panoramic London Skyline Views
With a coffee, and a book, in hand make your way to Primrose Hill for a serene afternoon surrounded by nature's beauty. Find a tranquil spot at the top of the hill to unwind with your new literary companion and relish the breathtaking views of London's skyline. Stay until sunset for an unforgettable experience.
Primrose Hill rises 63 meters (207 feet) above sea level, providing one of the best vantage points in London. From the top, you can enjoy unobstructed views of the city skyline, including landmarks such as the London Eye, The Shard, and the BT Tower.
Primrose Hill hosts several events throughout the year, including outdoor theater performances, community festivals, and fitness classes. Be sure to look around on community boards (and light posts) to see if there are any events occurring while you are visiting.
Walk to Camden Market Entrance approximately 0.9 miles (20 minutes)
Walk from Primrose Hill to Camden Market
As the day transitions into evening, immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Camden Market. Wander through its eclectic stalls, sampling an array of street foods from local vendors. Camden Market is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors annually.
Camden area comprises several distinct markets, including the original Camden Lock Market, the Stables Market, and the Electric Ballroom Market. Each market area offers a unique mix of products and experiences, from vintage clothing and handmade crafts to international street food and live performances.
Must Try Stalls In Camden Market, Best of London
Oli Baba’s is the best and original when it comes to halloumi fries in the capital city. Their deep-fried delicacies have received a lot of hype, but I can assure you that they live up to every single bit of it.
Stakehaus is ideal for steak lovers (like myself). Stakehaus offers British sustainable beef served with rosemary french fries or courgette fries. You can even add an egg for extra protein. You will not regret stopping here, I mean just look at the photos.
Yorkshire Burrito is a stall that combines the traditional British roast dinner with the concept of a burrito, wrapping up all the classic components like roast beef, potatoes, and gravy in a giant Yorkshire pudding. This one is a little messy, but totally worth it.
Indulge in British Cheese Delights: The Cheese Bar
Conclude your day with a culinary feast at The Cheese Bar, renowned for its delectable cheese-centric dishes. Conveniently located near the statue of Amy Winehouse, pay homage to the legendary singer while savoring exquisite British Cheese flavors.
The Amy Winehouse statue in Camden Market is a tribute to the iconic British singer who had a deep connection with the Camden area. The statue was unveiled on September 14, 2014, which would have been Amy Winehouse's 31st birthday.
The Cheese Bar is a great place to take a break and enjoy a nice day by sitting outside and enjoying one of their favorite cheese dishes. Some of their signature dishes include the Grilled Cheese Sandwich (best of London), made with sourdough bread and a blend of cheeses, and the Macaroni Cheese, a creamy and comforting classic.
Walk from Camden Market to the hotel approximately 0.5 miles (13 minutes)
